GREATEST SHOW IN THE GALAXY
THE GREATEST SHOW IN THE GALAXY
coming to DVD, I asked Dee about her role of Flowerchild,
and her involvement in Dr Who.....
think it was Alan Wareing who I then just recently met,
or had seen an episode of "No Place Like Home"
whilst he was stuck in a Hotel room somewhere, filming.
He called my lovely agent, Hazel Malone, for me to come
in and read for the part of an intergalactic hippy in "Dr
Who" (i.e Flowerchild).
I duly went in and read about 4 lines for Alan Wareing and
John Nathan Turner (Who was very cheeky and sweet incidentally),
and we laughed a lot.
did you film it, and how long did it take....
was filmed in a sand quarry in Dorset, I believe, and it
really did look loke another planet - it was like being
on Holiday, as we were having a freak heat wave at the time
-That section was filmed in the first week of June in 1988.
think the Flowerchild / Bellboy story took about 3 or 4
days in all to conclude.
I remember John Nathan Turner directed, and was responsible
for overseeing our rather passionate "Kiss and Goodbye"
scene, and he made us do it again and again and again....
until we stopped giggling and got over our embarrasment
- he was a lovely bloke and I was genuinely very fond of
As soon as we met in rehearsals in North Acton, it was like
Chris Guard and I had known each other for years - We just
"got" each other - he is a complete one off, witty,
intelligent, compassionate and a very gifted musician. He
was a delight to work with and I will readily admit, he
is a very good kisser.
a small role....
was told at the interview that it was a small role, and
the character would be killed off half way through the first
episode of a 4 part story line. But that didn't matter,
it was "Dr Who" afterall. We would've all done
it for free to be honest - nobody had any clue that it was
soon to be shelved for 16 years.
hair was shoulder length at the time, so that hair piece
was made for the part of Flowerchild specially. I know for
a fact it cost more than my fee - but it was a glorious
beast. I'm sure it popped up again in an episode of "Jonathan
Creek" - I'd recognise it anywhere.
Interesting note tho, the costume department were briefed
to base the "look" of Flowerchild and Bellboy
on Jim Morrison and his girlfriend Pamela....? And they
did, the costumes were stunning.
momentos? Nah - are you kidding? As if they would let us.
I did offer to buy Flowerchilds' earings (bought from a
market stall I believe), but they wouldn't let me.
seen it a few times since 1988, mainly with my Son, when
he was little, who loved it and was a bit frightened by
it (as we all have been as children), but for the life of
him, couldn't understand what on earth his Mother was doing
running around in it - playing with kites and with mad hair....
Just for the record, after Bellboy's
rather cheeky claim that Flowerchild has big feet....(commentary,
episode one of "Greatest show in the Galaxy")....
Dee would like it known, that Flowerchild shares the same
shoe size as her, that being a rather diddy, dainty like
size 4. As well you know Chris. Innit x.
THANKS to DEE for kindly taking the time to answer my questions
